On this day in 1932, Roy Richard Scheider was born.
He became well-known for his main and supporting performances in well-known movies from the 1970s through the early to mid-1980s. He received two Academy Award nominations.
Among his most well-known roles are Chief Martin Brody in Jaws (1975) and Jaws 2 (1978), NYPD Detective "Cloudy" Russo in The French Connection (1971), NYPD Detective "Buddy" in The Seven-Ups (1973), and Doc Levy in Marathon Man (1976)
The Seven-Ups (1973), a quasi-sequel to The French Connection in which Scheider's character is based on Grosso once more, was Scheider's first starring role. In Sheila Levine Is Dead and Living in New York, he played the second lead (1975).
Along with Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss, Scheider played Chief Martin Brody in the 1975 Hollywood blockbuster Jaws. One of cinema's most famous quotes is Scheider's impromptu line, "You're going to need a bigger boat." Jaws is easily one of my favourite movies, less about the shark on repeat viewing and more about the study of the relationship of the three characters thrown together in a small boat in the middle of the ocean.
Despite sharing the screen with legends Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier he steals the early part of the movie with his icey cold menacing performance as a spy and the scene in Paris is bourne before bourne.
