Rebel without a cause: Generational divides

O‍n this day in 1955 Rebel without a cause was released.

Directed by Nicholas Ray and is one of the most renowned examples of CinemaScope, intended to shake up the calm of suburbia life by examining the unrest seething beneath its apparent peace and propriety.

In 1955 just a month before Rebel was released James Dean died, cinema lost a true master of his craft. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Rebel as one of the top 100 movies. Today the movie continues to inspire people from different generations and cultures around the world.

Rebel Without A Cause is a classic movie about teenage angst that explores the complicated relationships between parents and teenagers. It follows the lives of a group of high school kids whose parents don’t understand them and who, consequently, struggle to find their place in the world.
The success of Rebel Without A Cause is due in large part to James Dean’s astonishing performance as the troubled teenager Jim Stark. Like many teenagers of the time, Jim is overwhelmed by the pressures of growing up and by the complexities of modern life. The movie was released in October 1955. It starred a number of young actors who became famous as a result of their roles: Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, and Edd “Kookie” Byrnes.

James Dean and his method acting, on the other hand, is the most out of place. His entire presence in the film gives a sense of uncontrollable rage. The image of him in his distinctive red jacket, collar raised and hands in pocket, is one of calm as well as barely restrained wrath. Dean's acting is absolutely modern, reminiscent of Marlon Brando. His improvised body language, with hushed motions and a bowed head, as well as his purposely inarticulate line reading, bring him inward from the screen, fostering a compelling mystery around him.

The cultural significance of Rebel Without A Cause is massive, it has been recognized as one of the best films ever made. It’s also a historical document in the sense that it depicts the post-war culture of the 1950s. The 1950s saw the end of WWII and the beginning of the Cold War. It was a time of anxiety, change, and uncertainty. Many teenagers grew up in broken homes and struggled to find their place in the world. The popularity of Rebel Without A Cause speaks to the relevance of its themes today. Cultures and generations have changed, but human nature has remained the same, sometimes we feel lost and disconnected from the different generations, be they older or younger.

James Dean passed away at the age of 24, but his legacy is far from over. His films—including East of Eden, Giant, and Rebel Without A Cause—have been celebrated for decades. Dean’s life has been celebrated for its youthful rebellion and for being an icon of coolness.
