King of the Monsters

“Ladies and gentlemen, I'm here tonight to tell you a very strange story — a story so strange that no one will believe it — but, ladies and gentlemen, seeing is believing. The 8th wonder of the world!!”

In 1962 a Toho Kaiju film brought together two of the world's biggest movie stars Gojira (Godzilla) and the 8th wonder of the world (Kong).

King of Skull Island, Kong was unleashed to the world in the 1933 movie. King Kong went on to appear in 12 movies and inspire a whole genre of monster movies including the recent Godzilla vs Kong released in 2021.

Godzilla or “king of the monsters” is a little bit younger and smashed his way onto the big screen in 1954 and became a worldwide pop culture icon. 32 films later he remains as popular as ever.

Godzilla represents the dangers of nuclear armament and is a metaphor for the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. King Kong is a warning against mankind's desire to exploit nature for personal gain.

In this art print I wanted to capture a dramatic and epic struggle between these two titans. It was taken from an early sketch I did in a series of drawings celebrating the release of Godzilla vs Kong in 2021 (check them out here). Offered in a variety of sizes including a large monster 20”x20” giclee print.
