A fictional city called Mega-City One appears in the Judge Dredd graphic novel series and other media. A post-nuclear megalopolis that occupied a large portion of what is currently the Eastern United States.
Mega-City One was created in 2032 to solve the severe overcrowding afflicting North American cities. Due to an experimental laser-defence system constructed to help defend the USA against nuclear attack, Mega-City One was one of the three major cities in 2070 to survive the nuclear war. The rest of the United States has really been reduced to wasteland or the Cursed Earth, outside of megacities it's a harsh place full of mutants and undesirables.
Inside the Megacities, huge tower blocks exist and it's a dangerous place where its inhabitants are bored and unemployed (due to technological advancements) which has led to lawlessness and overall unhappiness and despair. The city is divided into a dizzying array of blocks, and each one of these massive, high-rise buildings is home to thousands of people. These blocks are named after famous historical figures like Rowdy Yates, Ernest Borgnine and Charles Darwin, and every block has its own school, shops, hospital and militia.
Since 2070, when democracy was abolished in America, the Justice Department has been in charge of Mega-City One's dictatorship, where the Judges hand out punishment for crimes in which they are the Judge, Jury and Executioner.
