"The Sith took everything from me. Ripped me from my mother's arms, murdered my brother, used me as a weapon and then cast me aside. Abandoned me. Once, I had power, now I have nothing. Nothing."
Darth Maul first appeared in 1999 The Phantom Menace, a powerful student of the dark side. Although he only appeared in one film of the Star Wars prequels his popularity ensured he would be making a comeback. Maul later made appearances in The Clone Wars, Rebels and in the feature film spin-off Solo.
Despite his limited presence in The Phantom Menace, Maul has become known as the villain in the franchise and in popular culture for his intimidating appearance and double-bladed lightsaber. The character's comeback in The Clone Wars and his backstory further added to his popularity within the Star Wars fandom and earned him a cult following.
Following on from a Throwback Thursday Sketch (found below) I started working on a digital version immediately, I had published the Master Yoda the week before and it was only fair I balanced the force.
I wanted to capture the look of Darth Maul's design which is reminiscent of a devil or demon and then create a feeling of work based on Dante's Inferno. It was pencilled, inked by hand and then digitally lined, coloured and then distressed.
